Tips to Remove Black Mould from the Washing Machine

Washing machines are breeding grounds for black mold. The shape and the way seals are placed in washing machines make it difficult to clean them. Black mould can infiltrate washing machines due to moisture buildup, especially in the rubber gasket around the door. Damp conditions provide the ideal climate for mould growth. Additionally, leftover detergent or fabric softener residue can contribute to mould formation. Irregular cleaning routines or inadequate ventilation also led to the growth of black mould in the washing machine. If you want to prevent or get rid of black mould, here are eight quick tips to remove black mold from washing machine:

• When cleaning the washing machine, one should wear gloves, a mask, and goggles to safeguard themselves from mould spores.

• The next step is to remove any clothing, detergent dispensers, and other removable parts from the washing machine.

• Check the rubber gasket around the door, detergent drawer, and other areas for visible mould growth. Pay close attention to areas that collect moisture.

• Make a mixture of water and vinegar as a cleaning solution. Take equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray it generously at the affected areas, and let the solution rest for around 10–15 minutes. Then, use a sponge or a soft brush to scrub the mouldy areas. Wipe it clean with a damp cloth.

• Fill the detergent dispenser with white vinegar, and run the washing machine on the hottest cycle. This helps disinfect the drum and remove any mould or mildew buildup.

• Remove the detergent drawer and soak it in a solution of hot water and vinegar. Scrub any mould or residue with a brush, then rinse thoroughly and let it dry completely before reinstalling.

• After cleaning, run an empty rinse cycle with hot water to flush out any remaining vinegar or mould spores.

• If you want to avoid mould growth in the future, it is recommended to leave the washing machine door open between uses so that air can easily circulate around it. One should also wipe down the rubber gasket regularly and use good-quality washing machine cleaner or vinegar once a month to maintain cleanliness.
